Roscón De Reyes
Celebrate Epiphany with a traditional Spanish Roscón de Reyes from R. Garcia & Sons!
Roscón de Reyes is a ring shaped brioche type cake decorated with sugared fruit and is traditionally eaten on January 6, during the celebrations of the “Día de Reyes” (literally “Kings Day”), which commemorates the arrival of the three Magi or Wise Men. In Spain this is the day when children traditionally get presents, which are attributed to the Three Wise Men.
The tradition of placing a trinket (or figurine of the Christ Child) in a cake is very old. The baby Jesus, when hidden in the bread, represents the flight of Jesus, fleeing from King Herod.
In Spain, roscónes hide in their interior a figure - usually of Jesus or a King and a dry bean. Whoever finds the figure is crowned and becomes the “king” or “queen” of the banquet, whereas whoever finds the bean has to pay for next year’s roscón.
Our roscónes weigh approximately 650g and are suitable for approximately 6 people. Please be aware that they contain nuts, milk, eggs and are not gluten-free.
The roscónes come with a small figure to represent the king. This will be outside the cake (as will the bean “haba”) for people to place inside the roscón should they wish to as they could represent a choking hazard especially for small children. Please be aware that if these items are placed inside the roscón it is at your own risk.
There will only be one type of roscon available - the very popular Roscón Relleno De Nata (filled with whipped cream). We are importing them frozen from Spain. When you buy your roscón it will have just been very recently defrosted and so should be treated as fresh and not re-frozen. It will be at its best on the day of sale but kept refrigerated will still be fresh and delicious for up to 3 days from collection.
Price per Roscón:
